Consumer price inflation for April was reported at -0.1%, vs. consensus of 0.1%. The prior reading was 0.1%. The core inflation was at 0%, vs. prior reading of 0.0% and consensus of 0.1%.

A hint of deflation.

CPI For March At 0.1%

Consumer price inflation for March was reported at 0.2%, right at the consensus. The prior reading was 0%. The core inflation was at 0%, vs. prior reading and consensus at 0.1%.

No inflation, nor any hint of it.

When I Was Away

I was away from the computer and away from the markets, so let me recap most important developments.

  • MBA purchase applications were up 0.8% vs. 3.6% the week before.
  • Retail sales in December disappointed coming out at -0.3% vs. 0.4% consensus and 1.3% in November.
  • Initial jobless claims edged up reaching 444.000 vs. 437.000 consensus and 434.000 the week before.
  • Business inventories rose 0.4% in November vs. o.2% consensus and 0.2% in October.
  • CPI for December came right at the consensus of 0.1% vs. 0.4% in November.
  • Industrial production for December also right at the consensus of 0.6% vs. 0.8% in November.

Citgroup Equity Offering Becoming A Correction Catalyst?

Asia closed negative today, Europe is trading also negative -0.5% on average.

After I started began to doubt my calls on TARP repayments as a potential correction catalyst the Citigroup equity offering has turn out to be full blown fiasco. The offering was priced yesterday at $3.15 per share, a 20+ percent lower the share was trading before the offering announcement. Treasury delayed sale of its stake because the $3.15 per share price is 10% lower from the price the Treasury acquired its stake.
